Veteran Testimonial: Lola

From a U.S. Navy Veteran

I am a U.S. Navy Veteran with a background in special operations. I came out of military service after years of high operational tempo and multiple deployments. Like many veterans, I deal with the lasting effects of Operator Syndrome and SSD from moderate Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

My dog, Lola, has become a constant and steady presence in my day-to-day life. With TBI, I struggle with cognitive abilities and hormonal imbalances. Focus, memory, headaches, and mental fatigue are relentless challenges. Lola recognizes when I’m not at my best and naturally stays close, providing a sense of grounding that would otherwise be absent.

She helps bring structure and routine into my day, which is critical when dealing with the cognitive issues and imbalances of TBI. Whether it’s getting outside, staying active, or simply having that consistent presence, she keeps me moving forward even on difficult days. There are times when symptoms cause a complete breakdown of casual performance that can feel isolating, but having her there removes that feeling of being alone or disconnected.

Beyond that, she fills a role that I didn’t realize I needed to replace. After years of working in tight-knit units where trust and constant presence mattered, that absence is noticeable. Lola has become that steady companion. Whatever the daily mission is, she is always down and always supportive. Special Operations demand high-performance achievement. That pressure never goes away when a veteran separates from that environment. A canine companion can replace that pressure with grace. These companions don’t judge you on your performance.

What programs like Second Chance K9 are doing goes beyond pairing a veteran with a dog. They succeed in restoring a sense of connection, purpose, and stability. I’m grateful for what Lola brings into my life every day and for organizations that understand the impact these partnerships have on veterans like myself.
